The Motley Fool and A Show of Hands to be Recognized at Business Philanthropy Summit

Summit Recognizes and Honors Corporate Philanthropy in Alexandria as Part of “Spring for Alexandria” Three-Day Celebration

 

On Friday, April 30, Volunteer Alexandria will recognize local philanthropist and nonprofit leaders at the Spring for Alexandria’s Business Philanthropy Summit sponsored by Volunteer Alexandria. The annual summit is held to recognize and honor corporate philanthropy in Alexandria. The breakfast event will be hosted at the First Baptist Church of Alexandria, 2932 King St., from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. At the Summit, the 2010 Business Philanthropist in the large and small business categories and Nonprofit Leader Awards will be presented.

 

Following the Summit, the community is invited to volunteer for the Spring for Alexandria Day of Service to volunteer at project sites throughout the City. Volunteer help is needed from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to complete a variety of tasks, including landscaping, gardening, litter pickup, and painting. Businesses can also choose to offer pro bono services to local nonprofit groups. Registration and further information is now available at www.springforalexandria.kintera.org

This year’s Business Philanthropy Summit award winners:

•Business Philanthropist of the Year - Large Business -  The Motley Fool - The company's "Foolanthropy" giving program contributes $10,000 to the Carpenter's Shelter and other local Charities in addition to hundreds of hours of employee volunteer time.

•Business Philanthropist of the Year - Small Business -      A Show of Hands - This small business is an active leader in countless philanthropic efforts in Del Ray, including Community Partners for Children, the Del Ray Business Association, and the Salvation Army.

•Nonprofit Leader of the Year - Ken Naser - Ken has served as Executive Director of ALIVE! (Alexandrians InVolved Ecumenically) for five years, and was a dedicated volunteer for thirty years prior. Ken's leadership has grown ALIVE's seven direct service programs exponentially.

•Nonprofit Board Leader of the Year - Lee Fifer - A lifelong resident and involved citizen in Alexandria, Lee has served on the board of the Carpenter's Shelter since 1998 in addition to multiple other nonprofits boards and local committees.
